Letting Go of What Isn’t Serving You: 7 Ways to Support Change

“What lays behind the door of tomorrow has been readied by the events of today. But neither will matter if I’m blocking the door.” ― Craig D. Lounsbrough

Inventory time! We’re entering August which means a great time to evaluate what is working and what is not. Are you pleased with your choices? What is happening in your free time?

I just started a 66-day challenge for physical fitness and discovered what isn’t working for me is delaying my start to the gym. The biggest way I sabotage my workout is to think I can have one more cup of coffee. Even though I know what the problem is to my success, I had to take a hard look at if I was willing to change this cup of coffee. Once I identified that sneaky pattern, I was ready to change my 2nd cup of coffee after the core gym work out.

1. You have to want to change

Change does not happen unless you want it to.

2. Replace old habits with new ones

Old habits die hard. Help replace the temptation with a better replacement! For me, I’m going to pack a water bottle to help me with my workout and set the cup ready upon my return. When it comes to directing a choice to a better option, I replace sugar with crunch. Cherries, carrots, pears are my favorite to get me over the 3pm sugar craving.

3. Buddy up for change

It’s hard to create new habits and change. Ask for help from a friend to either participate in the activity or be accountable to. It’s easier to change when we’re open with another about the changes we are trying to make. Get support by having a trusted friend to help encourage you along.

“Ready? It doesn’t matter. The world is changed by people who aren’t ready.” ― Richie Norton

4. Mentor for the push

Need an extra level of support? Hire the coach, mentor, tutor, or trainer. We get farther with someone who is farther ahead. Keep the commitment of working together for the agreed upon time-frame and see the results!

5. Mindset matters

We are inspired by examples of where we are wanting to grow. This is the external moving the internal. We desire growth and will it to happen in our lives. This is the internal moving the external. It is a dance of both what we surround ourselves with and the company we keep within our own minds that fuels the outcome. Keep careful watch over your thoughts to keep motivated.

“Too late, I found you can't wait to become perfect, you got to go out and fall down and get up with everybody else.” ― Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes

6. Progress not perfection

If we keep waiting for the perfect to be our measure, we’ll have very little to applaud. Instead shift the focus off the future size or amount and turn to today. Am I improving from 3 months ago? We are works in progress as we each try to achieve what it is that is most important to us. Focus on your progress and…

7. Celebrate

Celebrate how far you have come! Please regularly celebrate the progress that you made toward a goal or success you have earned! Celebration is an important practice to achieving change.

Namaste,

Laura
